Common Car Problems and How to Fix Them

Having a car means experiencing different problems. Some of them can be fixed with simple DIY methods, while others may need professional repairs. Therefore, diagnosing the issue and deciding what your vehicle needs should be your priority.

Here are some common car problems and how you can fix them.

Dents, Scratches, and Collision Damage

It is common for a car to get minor dents and scratches. Superficial scratches that haven’t penetrated deeply into the paint just need polishing. However, deep scratches and dents may need professional attention.

In case of a major accident, your vehicle’s body can suffer a lot of damage. So, for collision repair, you need to take it to an automotive body repair shop, where technicians inspect the vehicle and restore it.

Carburetor Problems

If you have an older car, it must have a carburetor. A carbureted engine can develop several issues, such as stalling, poor acceleration, difficult starting, or excessive fuel consumption. Noticing these problems means you need to get it fixed immediately.

Depending on your vehicle, you can replace old components with new carburetor accessories, clean the carburetor, or adjust it. However, before replacing any component, make sure to diagnose the real cause of the problem.

Engine Won’t Start

Most car owners have faced this issue. If your car refuses to start, the reason can be a faulty battery, fuel system, engine electronics, or ignition system.

To identify the actual issue, check the battery terminals to see whether they are clean and secure. Also, make sure that your vehicle is not out of fuel. If all of these things are fine, then you need professional help.

Overheating

Your engine becoming overheated can have many causes, such as low coolant, a faulty cooling system, or a damaged radiator. If a temperature warning appears, stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so.

Remember, never take off the radiator cap when the engine is hot because pressurized coolant can cause severe burns. After the engine has cooled, you can check whether the problem is with the coolant or there are leaks. In case of persistent overheating, take your car to professionals.

Battery Problems

A worn battery makes it difficult for your vehicle to function properly. Engine cranking, dim lights, and even complete electrical failure can become a headache if you ignore battery problems. Sometimes, your vehicle’s charging system or other electrical components also drain your battery.

To solve this issue, try the battery and charging system test. It will show whether the battery or any other system is responsible for the problem.

Brake Problems

Brakes are some of the most essential components. Their failure can put you and other drivers on the road in serious danger. Weird sounds, a soft brake pedal, vibration while braking, and pulling to one side while braking are signs of brake failure.

If the brakes don’t function normally, stop the vehicle and take it to a professional as soon as possible.

Strange Noises and Vibrations

Unusual sounds and vibrations can indicate what’s wrong with your car. If you hear squealing noises, it usually means a problem with the belt or brakes. A grinding noise can indicate serious wear.

Vibrations can be caused by misaligned tires, suspension issues, or drivetrain issues. Do not ignore such sounds and vibrations. Getting professional help can diagnose and fix the issue before it becomes expensive.
